There are a lot of things to do and to see
Adventurous tours by boat. River “Altmühl” is an ideal water for a leisurely canoe trip and paddling. It is actually the slowest flowing river in Bavaria. Following the river, which meanders down over 150 kilometres from Gunzenhausen to Kelheim, you can discover the beauty of the picturesque scenery of the holiday region in the very heart of Bavaria. Propelled by the sheer muscle power, you will paddle past steep limestone formations, willow trees with branches drooping down into the water and riverbanks covered with reeds. Guided boat trips are organised daily, weather permitting. At normal flow, you can make easily 5 kilometres per hour paddling down the river.
Take time out. Enjoy peacefulness. Follow your own rhythm. In the “Altmühltal” Nature Park awesome rock formations alternate with sun-kissed heathlands dotted with juniper trees, lovely valleys and extensive woodlands to be discovered during a walk. The countless well maintained and well waymarked footpaths take the walker across a marvellous natural scenery and a countryside steeped in history. Mighty fortresses, restored castles and spectacular archeologic treasures bear witness to the Celtic, Roman and Germanic period. Long-distance trails, such as the “Altmühltal Panaroma Trail” leading from Gunzenhausen to Kelheim, and numerous walking routes running in the surroundings of Beilngries enrapture the walkers.
