Winter Walks

The “Altmühltal” Nature Park is worth a visit in any season. However, when the lovely countryside has become white after the first sprinkle of snow, a stay in the “Altmühltal” Valley is a truly amazing experience. Enjoy a stroll along the footpaths in the surroundings. Reward yourself afterwards with a glass of mulled wine at a Christmas market in one of the neighbouring historic towns.

Ice Skating

In winter you find several frozen tarns in the “Altmühltal” Nature Park, where you can enjoy ice skating. Other than smoothly sliding over the ice on the skates, you can also try your hand at curling. The “Bärenwirtsweiher” tarn, providing a heated room and a kiosk, as well as the “Aumühlweiher” tarn are beautiful spots to enjoy winter sports.

Walk with the huskies at night

Only about 15 minutes away from the Gams Hotel, you can immerse yourself in a Canadian ambience. In the near town of Dietfurt, you can find the Snow Wolf Valley Husky Ranch. The owners have made a long-cherished dream come true. Other than raising huskies, they offer unique experiences for visitors of all ages. You can, for example, join in on a walk at night in the company of huskies. After having become acquainted with the animals and received some information on the character of these dogs, you will get a few instructions regarding the gear. Afterwards, you can finally head off for the walk. The children can take the lead helped by an adult. The walk ends with a gathering around the campfire on the ranch. The participants are served snacks and drinks.

Cross-Country Skiing

A glittering white scenery, a blue sky and sunshine. Within a short distance from the Gams Hotel, you find two cross-country skiing trails. The shorter track of about 10 kilometres is located in the village of Aschbuch and starts in front of the “Treffer” Inn. The other country-country skiing trail takes the winter sports enthusiast from Hirschberg to Kaldorf or vice versa. You can start either in “Fürstenstraße” street in Hirschberg or near the “Buchberger” Farm in Kaldorf. The track is 15 kilometres long.

Open Air Dinosaur Museum

Catch some glimpses into what seems to be a realm of fantasy. Marvel at fascinating prehistoric specimen that overshadow everything we know today by the strangeness of their appearance and their size. Following the 1.5-kilometre long adventure trail across the Dinosaur Park, you can undertake a thrilling journey back in time through different geological periods and immerse yourself in 400 million years of evolutionary history.

There are two certified thermal springs providing precious mineral water that fills the thermal pools of the “Altmühltherme” Spa in Treuchtlingen and of the “Limes-Therme” Spa in Bad Gögging. Furthermore, you can spend relaxing moments in the curative sulphurous water of the “Kaiser-Therme” in Bad Abbach.
